Phil Raymond 'Joe Fish' Dupoint

Dr. Phil Raymond "Joe Fish" Dupoint, Topoie, was born in Lawton, OK on January 25, 1954, to Joseph "Happy" and Georgia (Botone) Dupoint and passed from this earth on January 2, 2025, in Anadarko, OK at the age of 70. He was raised by his grandmother, Celia Maude Hainta. Joe took immense pride in the fact that he was a full blood member of the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma and a direct descendant of Chief Sate-T'hai-Day and Chief Ahpeahtone.
He grew up in the close-knit community of Carnegie, Oklahoma, where he went to school. He also attended school in Gallup, New Mexico, and later obtained his GED.
Joe held many titles within his People, of which he was a devoted member of the Kiowa Native American Church, Headsman for the Kiowa Gourd Clan, "Grandpa Rabbit" for the Kiowa Gourd Clan, and Singer for Kiowa Black Leggings Society. He travelled extensively throughout the country leading his drum group Bad Medicine, where they won many competitions and made relations with many that he held close. His life's work was sharing his knowledge of Kiowa teachings/protocol and he was a former Project Coordinator for the Kiowa Language Program and was currently employed by the Kiowa Tribe as Tribal Historian. One of his greatest achievements was being honored by Bacone College in receiving an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters for his contribution to the cultural, spiritual, and ceremonial health and well-being of the Kiowa People.
Joe is survived by his daughter, Karita Ramos; his boy, Harold "Buggs" Neconie; Phyllis Whitecloud and son, Gary Whitecloud Jr.; his sisters: Loretta Scantlen, Lela Cozad, Cheryl Gouge, Carrie "Chickie" Whitebuffalo, and Franda Flyingman; brothers: Alan Yeaquo, Cletis Gayton, Steve Bohay, James Tofpi, and Gene Ray Ahboah; aunts, Francis Bailey, Agnes Hiney; Uncle Cletis Satepauhoodle and a host of brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, little brothers and little sisters; as well as extended relations made throughout Indian Country.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Georgia Dupoint; daughter, Cara Lynn Dupoint; grandparents, Herbert Topoie Dupoint and Cecelia Maude (Hainta Mah); aunts, Pearl Woodard and Ida Kaubin; Uncle Raymond Whitebuffalo; sisters, Marilyn Darlene, Hazel Celia, Sheila Ann, and Christine Sue, Lena Kaulaity, Allene Woodard; brothers, Donald Earl Dupoint, Phil Bohay, George Botone, Marquis Woodard, Allen Woodard, Thomas Woodard, Tony Isaacs; and the love of his life, Joyce Ann Dupoint.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 7, 2025 at the Red Wolf Hall in Carnegie, OK.
Visitation was from 1-8, Sunday, January 5, 2025, and from 1-6 p.m., Monday, January 6, 2025, at Ray & Martha's Funeral Home in Carnegie, OK.
A Wake was held at 7 p.m., Monday, January 6, 2025, at the Red Wolf Hall in Carnegie, OK.
Interment was in the Cedar Creek Cemetery in Carnegie, OK.
Services were under the direction of Ray & Martha's Funeral Home, Carnegie, OK.
